Ways To Make Safety a Priority at Your School
education

Your students’ safety should be your top priority as a superintendent. Emergencies and accidents can happen, especially with younger kids, so you must be fully prepared. Remember that school is where your students will spend most of their day, so it’s imperative to keep them safe. Check out our top ways to prioritize safety at your school below.

Have an Injury Prevention Plan

Most student injuries, especially for younger kids, are related to falls and, in some cases, roughhousing. While you won’t be able to control your students’ behavior directly, you can modify the environment to minimize accidents. This could mean outfitting your school buses with relevant safety features or making sure there isn’t any harmful equipment on the grounds that could cause trouble.

If construction is happening on the premises, ensure students know to avoid it. Ensure that all students wear the appropriate gear during sports and recreation and understand the game’s rules. This and many other methods can help keep your kids safe.

First Aid Protocols

You have to understand that while you can modify the environment, you won’t be able to prevent injuries completely. Children get hurt, especially younger children, in falls and fights, so you must have a first aid protocol for when it happens. Keep basic first aid supplies, like gauze and bandages, on hand in case of accidents. It’s also a good idea to have cold medicine. If you can, hire a school nurse on the premises to help. Before giving any child medication, clear it with their parents so that it doesn’t clash with anything the child might be taking. This is an important way to make safety a priority in your school.

Beware of Food Allergies

Food allergies are serious and can lead to hospital visits and even death. Make sure you have parents sign a form at the beginning of the school year detailing any food allergies their child might have, especially for students who are brand new to the school. Some allergies can have life-threatening side effects, so you must get this right. This is also where having a nurse on staff can save a life.

Overall, keeping your students safe is key to a successful school year. It also keeps your institution safe from lawsuits. As long as you can keep yourself and your kids safe, you can focus on what matters throughout the school year: academic success.
