You know what I’ve been thinking? With one win at home and another on the road, it was quite the week for the Peabody-Lynnfield-North Reading girls hockey squad.
After last winter’s tournament loss to St. Mary’s at Connery Rink, PLNR chose not to run, but rather, retaliate this season.
Coach Michelle Roach’s team defeated No. 24 Winchester to kick off the postseason, then visited No. 8 Pope Francis in a Sunday night thriller, leaving with a 2-1 upset win.
Against Winchester – a hard-skating, formidable No. 24 seed, as said by Roach – PLNR skated to a 1-0 win at McVann-O’Keefe Rink.
And to no PLNR fan’s surprise, netminder Alyse Mutti sported a 31-save shutout.
“She is a fantastic goalie and the backbone of the team,” Roach said after Thursday’s game.
Then, on the brink of elimination against Pope Francis, Mutti played another strong game. Add two goals from Eleni Spack and Shirley Whitmore, and you’ve got yourself a ticket to the Elite 8.
Next is Notre Dame (Hingham) this Wednesday with puck-drop set for 8 p.m. at John A. Ryan Arena.
PLNR, good week.
