The No. 34 Lynn Classical boys basketball team saw its season come to an end at No. 31 Foxborough Tuesday evening, falling by a score of 52-39 in an MIAA Division 3 preliminary.

Classical led 9-8 after the first quarter due to five forced turnovers, but Foxborough roared back to lead, 36-30, by the end of the third.

Rolky Brea Arias had 14 points and 11 rebounds heading into the final frame.

But his Rams couldn’t get over the hump in the fourth, as Foxborough’s Ryan Cotter scored a team-high 18 points, while teammate Eric Walford added 16. 

“I’m just, overall, very happy with the season and I’m looking forward to next year,” said Classical coach Marvin Avery. “It was a great ride and my seniors got to play in a state tournament  game.”

BOYS BASKETBALL 

No. 28 Peabody 50

No. 37 Belmont 43

No. 28 Peabody, 19-2, survived a third quarter in which the Tanners made only two baskets to hang on against No. 37 Belmont at home Tuesday night. 

The Tanners never trailed in this one and led by as many as 13 late in the first half, which ended with Peabody comfortably on top, 31-21. 

But the Marauders went on a 6-0 run to start the third, cutting the lead to 31-27. Then, they closed to within four twice more in the fourth quarter. 

With 19 seconds to go, it was still a two-possession game with the Tanners on top, 47-41. Enter the dynamic duo of guards Raphel Laurent and Anthony Forte, who, together, connected on three of four free throws to put the game out of reach.

Peabody secured its spot in the Division 1 Round of 32 at No. 5 Xaverian this Friday at 6 p.m. It’s a chance for the Tanners to avenge their 59-44 loss in the Round of 32 last season.

Laurent led all scorers with 21 points, while Forte had 19. Johnny Lucas (6 rebounds, 2 steals) had only two points, but was big on the glass late. 

Jariel Tolentino (4 boards, 2 steals) chipped in four points and Cam Connelly also contributed with five rebounds and a steal. Aneudy Medrano (2 points, 6 rebounds, block) and Jimmy Festa (2 points, 4 rebounds) delivered key minutes off the bench.

“Aneudy Medrano played well off the bench,” said Peabody coach Thad Broughton. 

GIRLS BASKETBALL

No. 32 Westborough 57

No. 33 Marblehead 49

The Magicians bowed out of the Division 2 tournament with a close road loss to Westborough. 

Westborough led, 25-24, at halftime thanks to a buzzer-beating shot, but Marblehead retaliated in the third quarter, taking a 35-33 lead heading into the final frame.

Unfortunately for the Magicians, they couldn’t maintain their lead down the stretch. 

GIRLS HOCKEY

No. 20 Westford Academy 3

No. 13 Winthrop 2

The Vikings (13-3-3) were upset on home ice in the opening round of the Division 1 tournament. 

Winthrop struck first in the opening period with five minutes to go as Izzy Cash assisted Talia Martucci who tucked the puck away (1-0).

Westford tied it in the second period off a powerplay goal. There was a scrum in front of Winthrop’s net, and Delilah Cioffi was the first to react to the loose puck before firing it home to equalize. 

A few moments later, Westford took the lead thanks to a goal from Kiley Carmichael. Winthrop responded quickly to tie the game, 2-2, courtesy of Martucci’s second.

But in the third period – with less than five minutes to go – Jacqueline Chase scored on a powerplay to give the visitors the lead, and win.
