Recently, in one of those news segments that warn of disturbing footage, I saw a young Ukrainian mother walking along a street with her 4-year-old child. In the very next frame, they were lying dead on the pavement, the victims of a Russian missile attack. In another, there was pictured an enormously long trench, so long that it might be mistaken for a canal or some project for laying pipes across the country side. It was a mass grave. Men were hastily dropping the bodies of murdered civilians into it. At one point they slipped, and the leg of one of the victims shot out of the bag before the deceased was flipped over before plopping onto the other bodies.Try to imagine interring a parent or other loved one of yours in so horrid a way!
We have a group in Congress, all of them professedly and pompously moralists, who are willing not only to tolerate, but aggravate, this horror and any other cruelty necessary, including the deprivation of children in this country, to advance the agenda of an arguably deranged draft-dodging megalomaniac with dictatorial aspirations. Indeed, he is quite literally dictating what our national legislature can and cannot do now! They do not want the border problem solved, but worsened. They do not want to meet our obligations to allies, and in fact they do not want government to function at all. They want chaos and disorder, because these benefit the master they serve!
They hold up every piece of legislation that might benefit the country, and they hold the country itself up to the ridicule and possibly the disgust of the international community. They take from the nation any image of or identity it has with honor, duty, courage, and commitment, so as to deliver it into the hands of a capricious despot who has none of these!
They are themselves the domestic enemies they swore to protect the constitution from. They at minimum aid and abet, and at maximum consort with, a known and very determined foreign enemy. Putin is not that different from Hitler: “Today Kyiv, tomorrow the world.” Where do you stop him: Poland, Hungary, Westerly, R.I.?
The courageous and suffering Ukrainian people are not asking that our 10th Marine Division come to their country; they ask only for a hand up, not a hand out. They ask only for a fighting chance to put Trump’s beady-eyed blockhead “genius” back in the bottle. It’s a good deal. It does not require American youngsters being shipped to Dover Air Base in coffins. It does not mean some kid from Milton needs to be dodging bullets in Krakow rather than matriculating in Boston University or UMass, where he belongs. Not yet, anyway! It’s only a few bucks! There must be a way to keep Trump and his fawning court jesters from screwing it up!
