More than 75 relatives and friends celebrated Don Smith’s 90th birthday party at the Community Brotherhood of Lynn Saturday.

Smith, a former assistant director of the Lynn Planning Department and the first African American employee at City Hall, retired in 2003 after 32 years working for the city.

“It was one of the best things of my life,” Smith said of the party. “I had no idea walking in that night there would be such an overwhelming response, and so I enjoyed myself.”

Lynn Mayor Jared Nicholson and city councilors presented Smith with a citation at the party. Also in attendance was his wife of 62 years, Edna.

“Somebody said that when I become 100, we’ll have another celebration,” Smith said.
