Chestnut Woods Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center in Saugus began its Operation Santa Paws drive on Dec. 1, aiming to gather pet supplies for donation to a local animal shelter.
The skilled nursing facility, located at 73 Chestnut St., facilitated the collection of various items such as blankets, towels, pet beds, unopened pet food and treats, toys, grooming products, collars, leashes, and food and water bowls until Dec. 22.
The donated items will find their way to the Northeast Animal Shelter in Salem, as part of the center’s effort to contribute to the welfare of animals in the community. The Northeast Animal Shelter is set to receive a range of supplies to support the well-being of the animals under its care.
According to its website, as one of the largest animal-adoption centers in New England, the Northeast Animal Shelter has successfully transported more than 125,000 cats and dogs to the region. Recognizing the high demand for adoptable pets, the shelter has been instrumental in placing these animals into loving homes since its establishment.
Chestnut Woods Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center is known for incorporating animal-assisted therapy into the lives of its residents. According to a press release, “the center recognizes the significance of therapy animals, especially for residents dealing with dementia and Alzheimer’s. The positive impacts of animal therapy on seniors include emotional well-being, heightened self-esteem, enhanced social skills, and a decreased likelihood of experiencing depression and anxiety.”
Founded in 2001 by Justin Rudd, Operation Santa Paws encourages animal lovers to donate blankets, treats, food, toys, supplies, and money for sheltered animals nationwide. Originating in Long Beach, Calif., the initiative has expanded globally, reaching as far as the United Kingdom and Hong Kong.
