3 Essential Tips for Proper Hygiene While Camping
news

Getting dirty is part of the allure of a carefree camping adventure. But maintaining proper hygiene protects your health and makes the trip more pleasant. Stay clean and energized with these three essential tips for proper hygiene while camping.

1. Use Nature-Friendly Hygiene Essentials

Eco-friendly products are gentler on the environment and essential for respectful camping. Remember not to use any toiletries within 200 feet of a water source, even if those items are biodegradable.

Look for products that have natural, biodegradable, non-petroleum ingredients. These are the hygiene essentials to bring on your trip:

  • Soap
  • Shampoo
  • Toothbrush
  • Toothpaste
  • Floss
  • Unscented wipes for the face or body
  • Quick-drying towel
  • Toilet paper
  • Feminine hygiene products

You do not have to bring every item on this list. But if you don’t have access to ample water, for example, you might rely on unscented body wipes for cleaning.

2. Shower Mindfully

Another essential tip for proper camping hygiene is to shower mindfully. Do not use soap or other bathing products if you’re in a lake or stream, as they can contaminate the water and harm plant and animal life.

For soapy showers, you’ll need to bring extra water. And be sure to shower at least 200 feet away from a water source.

Portable camp showers are easy to use and don’t take up much space. Consider bringing a dry bag shower. You can fill it with water, let the bag sit in the sun during the day, then hang it up and open the valve at the bottom for a warm shower.

3. Wash Clothes As Needed

No matter the temperature outside, wearing moisture-wicking base layers will help keep you dry and comfortable. How often you should wash your base layers depends on your activities, your personal preferences, and the clothing material. Many people can go for up to three days without washing their clothes.

You can rinse your clothes instead of washing them or use camping-safe laundry detergent. Check the care instructions on your clothing tags before cleaning since synthetic and wool fabrics require different care methods.

You’ll want to wear clean underwear and socks daily, as these items can get quite dirty and harbor the most bacteria.
